Starting List
Ok - this list isn’t going to be exhaustive as we’ll add to it as we go along however to start up I need:
1. Blogging Software - chosen Wordpress as I am familiar with it and it is easy to work with. Wordpress also has an impressive list of plug-ins should I need to add any functionality in the future.
2. Domain name registered - I always use 123-Reg now as they are cheap, quick and on the odd occassion I had to contact their support unit, I received responses the same day.
3. Affiliate agreements setting up - I am going to use a number of different affiliate companies in order to get the widest range of products available. I have now set up affiliates with:
- Affiliate Window
- Webgains
- Tradedoubler
- Amazon
- Ebay - Declined me !!
- Google Adsense
- Google Affiliate Network - Declined me !!
4. Development environment - what??? Yep, much of what we will be doing over the next 24 months is going to involve a fair amount of web site coding and tweaking. You are going to need a working knowledge of a server-side scripting language (we are using PHP) as well as database design and implimentation (we will be using MySQL). If you have no idea how to code websites and have no interest in learning then you will still be able to follow alot of what we are doing and impliment them yourself.
If you are interested in learning more about PHP and MySQL then these two books have proved invaluable to me over the last 2 years:
- PHP In A Nutshell by Paul Hudson
- MySQL Crash Course by Ben Forta
In addition, you need to have a testing environment on a local machine to test any tweaks or new websites out before you load them onto the live server. As I use MySQL and PHP, I use a free local environment called Xampp For Windows (although they also do versions for Linux, Macs and Solaris).
Finally, you will need somewhere to host your blogs, websites etc. I am using my own server however if you do not want to take on the added expense at this stage then, again, I can recommend 123-Reg as a decent web hosting company as well.
Ok, thats about it for preparation as far as tools are concerned. The other vital component in all of this is knowledge - the more research and reading you can do, the better. As I go through the next 24 months, I will provide you with links to all the online resources I have used - there are many more and there is no substitute for knowledge and experience so learn, learn, learn!
