Starting on the project web designs
I always do things back-to-front. Every book that I have ever read on web design has said that the design comes last! For me, its one of the first things I do - that way I can visualise how the page will look and what modules I need to write.
Last night I made a start on the generic look of the websites - remember, they are all going to run off a central domain name and so the look of each website will be practically identical apart from the stock being displayed.
I want the code to be as sparse and clean as I can get it - and the same goes for my CSS although I must admit that my CSS knowledge leaves a little (a lot?) to be desired and I tend to hack it about until it does what I want it to whether or not I understand why.
So, the design I have come up with as a working-template is this:
I did the sketch in Macromedia Fireworks - a graphics program that I have used for years and find has a quick workflow for this type of project. This is the first time I have worked out a sketch first and then started creating the CSS around the sketch.
I think the design looks fresh and very clean as well has having several ‘invitations to buy’ modules dotted throughout.
